Travel in China

Welcome to Zhongdian

In the foothills of the Himalayas, there are as many Han (Chinese majority) army men as there are Tibetans. You aren't sure if the army ignores you because there haven't been any uprisings lately, or if they are just busy battling altitude sickness.

On Emeishan you encountered mainland Chinese Buddhism. When you visit the lamasary, you notice the brighter colors in the clothing and art of Tibetan Buddhism. Locals ask if you have any photos of the Dali Lama.

Here you see more evidence of the earthquake that struck in 1996.

Prayer flags.

You decide you'd like to be warm again, so you back-track to Kunming and hop on a cramped and smokey sleeper.Next to Burma.
